Research Projects
While the students in grades 3 through 5 utilize research skills in many facets of their daily learning, the South Brunswick School District has two formal district research tasks, which are conducted collaboratively by the media specialist and classroom teacher in the library media center. A combination of print and online sources (databases, search engines, and websites) are used to uncover important information and details relating to each subject. Students take notes, take citation information
Third Grade
Third grade students at Brooks Crossing work on several introduction to research lessons before starting research on the first district research project on planets. Towards the end of the school year, and as part of their study on U.S. immigration and ethnic heritage, the third graders research the country of their ethnic heritage.
Fourth Grade
The first district research project for fourth graders focuses on biomes/ecosystems around the world. The project on safety focuses on the many aspects of car passenger, bus, scooter, bicycle, all terrain vehicle, pedestrian, and railroad safety.
Fifth Grade
The students in grade 5 use their knowledge of the five themes of geography and apply their knowledge to one of the fifty states. They work collaboratively with their classmates to create a presentation, which is shared with each other. The other district research project focuses on 21st century careers. Students use databases and print sources to uncover information about a specific career and create a brochure.
