Library Media Center Program & Procedures
Brooks Crossing Library Media Center (LMC) Mission
The goal of the LMC is to encourage the love of reading and support the quest for knowledge through teaching. Library and research skills are taught throughout the school day.
The Brooks Crossing LMC is open for student book exchange every day. The first to fifth grade populations use the LMC in various ways.
First & Second Grade Library Program
The first and second graders have a weekly library "special" where they build their foundation in information literacy as well as gain location skills, which helps them to navigate through the fiction and non-fiction sections of our space. During this weekly meeting, students participate in a library lesson, share a great read aloud, and select a book to borrow. Books are generally due back the following week so others may share the book as well. However, students may also renew books. The weekly return of books helps to build student routines, responsibility and respect.
Mrs. Tom teaches first and second grade library classes at BC. Mrs. Kish teaches all classes at the Deans building. They work closely together so the curricular information is consistent and a strong foundation is built for all students.
Third graders meet with Mrs. Tom weekly to continue building the foundation of literacy and library skills started in prior years. These students focus on using the Alexandria Researcher system to find the books they want and/or need. Students learn to search by title, author, series, subject, and locate the call number for the book. The students then work on navigating the library and locating the books. In addition, students participate in lessons focusing on introductory research skills which include nonfiction text features, taking notes, citing sources and creating a bibliography. Students are also introduced to classic reference sources as well as databases, search engines, and the importance of using reliable websites. Use of google and especially wikipedia is not appropriate for our elementary students.
Third graders participated in guided research work and projects throughout the year.
Third, Fourth & Fifth Grade Library Program
The upper grade students participate in three research projects each year. The lessons are collaborative taught by Mrs. Tom and the classroom teacher, and research is generally conducted in the LMC with some lessons occurring in the classroom.
Book exchange for the third through fifth grade students occurs throughout the school day. Each class visits the library media center weekly to select new books. Students in the upper grades may keep their library books for a two-week lending period, and may renew the book as long as others are not looking to borrow the book.
Lost Books
Students who lose or damage borrowed library books are expected to replace the book. This may be done in two ways.
